The Atlit Detainee Camp and the Story of Clandestine Immigration

Barracks, barbed wire and an immigrant ship: the story of those who reached the shore against British law.

The Atlit Detainee Camp and the Story of Clandestine Immigration
Zionism & Pioneers

In the 1930s and 40s ships carrying thousands of refugees and immigrants reached the coast, defying British limits. Many were held in the camp at Atlit. We visit the restored barracks, the disinfection house and the immigrant ship, and hear the personal stories of people who passed through.

We also talk about the October 1945 raid, when Palmach fighters freed two hundred detainees, and about what clandestine immigration meant on the road to statehood.
