In the War of Independence Jerusalem was under siege, and the road to it ran between hills held by Arab forces. At Latrun, by the British police fort that became Yad La-Shiryon, we hear about the hard battles for the junction and visit the large tank collection.
We continue to Sha'ar HaGai, where the armored-car shells of the convoys still stand, and walk part of the Burma Road, the bypass cut by night to bring food and weapons to Jerusalem.
Route notes
